Sending e-mails

I seem unable to send e-mails through mail.btinternet.com. It keeps asking me for password although I've chosen to keep one and this box is completed. Now I've forgotten what the passwork is and the message can't be sent. Please advise course of action to take. Many thanks Jenny Jarvis

RE: Sending e-mails

A very common cause of this problem is a temporary outage of the computer that your email provider users to validate your username and password. So the problem is nothing to do with you or your computer in the first instance. But instead of a helpful message to tell you this you just get a box popping up.

If you make the mistake of guessing the answers to enter in the box and you guess wrong then in the worst case your computer goes on remembering the wrong answers and you end up stuck unable to receive emails nor (sometimes) to send them either.

What can you do? I think you have to phone BT Technical Support and ask them to reset your password. The neter your username (which is your email address) and the new password in the box.

If for some reason you cannot do this then a Computer Professional might have tools that could read your old password off the computer. I have usually succeeded in situations like yours.

RE: Sending e-mails

BT has a habit of resetting or deleting e-mil accounts for no apparrent reason, especially dial-up accounts
Give them a ring, but don't be surprised if the account has been lost

RE: Sending e-mails

BT actually have an online password reset facility here: https://register.btinternet.com/cgi-bin/load_page?page=/selfhelp/pwdRst_username.html . But this will only work if you can remember the answer to your security question.

RE: Sending e-mails

The other possibility is that the stored password has been "forgotten" by Windows. This happens occasionally with XP, and other versions of Windows. To fix it, you have to edit the Registry, and this deletes all stored passwords and lets you set them up again.
