I have also seen this recently with an HP laptop. The original wifi card was working, although suspect, and I replaced it with a known working Intel one and got the 104 error.

It seems that HP/Compaq have hardcoded certain wifi cards into the BIOS, and if you try and install a different model, it won't even boot. You MUST use the same make and model of wifi card that was originally installed.

I suspect that its because the wifi on/off is controlled at BIOS level - on an HP you can usually enable / disable wifi from within the BIOS settings. For that to work it would have to be a specific model of card. Best solution is remove it and replace with a USB or PCMCIA one depending on model
