Laptop Screen - Intermittent 'Jumping' Problem

Hi there, we have a problem with a laptop screen. It is unlikely to be the cable which connects the motherboard with the lcd screen as moving the screen doesn't make any difference. Intermittently, the screen starts scrolling and jumping. The PC seems to continue working properly in the background as when this happened during an uninstallation of a program the uninstallation completed successfully. The problem doesn't seem to be related to any specific program that is running, how long the PC has been switched on for or how many programs are running at the time. Someone mentioned this could be overheating. Any other ideas - could this be software related? Many thanks!

RE: Laptop Screen - Intermittent 'Jumping' Problem

Hi thanks for this. It does seem strange that it's only intermittent and it can go for weeks without happening. Still, we'll carry on and see if it gets worse. Thanks!

Can you plug an external monitor in to the PC and see if the problem occurs on that as well. If it does not, it is probably the LCD, if it does, it may be the video chip.

RE: Laptop Screen - Intermittent 'Jumping' Problem

Its not a screen fault as I have seen many of these come in for replacment. If the screen is faulty then it would go blank over some or all of it. The most likely cause is the graphics chip which will mean a new mainboard. or the inverta will be on its way out. that only way to test it is using a external monitor plugged into the VGA socket and see what happens. If the same happens then the Graphics chip is failing
