Installing new Laptop hd

I have a 17inch samsung laptop running windows xp. I use it purely for the media centre. The keyboard does not work, this is not a problem as I use the on screen keyboard.
I want to install a new larger hd. Will I be able to do this without a physical keyboard?

Any advice appreciated.

RE: Installing new Laptop hd

Installing the hard drive is not an issue. The issue is installing an operating system on the hard drive and for this you will need to enter some information which will require a keyboard.

I assume you have an XP installation disc?

You could use an external keyboard.

The other alternative is retain the current hard drive and use an external hard drive to add memory.

Hi,

Yes I have all the dics that came with it.
If I plug it up to an external keyboard with the keyboard still be recognised? Sometimes they need drivers etc dont they?

RE: Installing new Laptop hd

The laptop should "see" the external keyboard and allow it to be used. Plug it in and see is the easiest way.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help mate.

RE: Installing new Laptop hd

Its a nice idea but no unless you have an identical machine and then install the operating system from scratch.

The other way is to use a programme like Norton Ghost to burn an image of your existing operating system onto a disc(s) and then having installed your new hard drive use the disc(s) to copy the o/s etc etc onto it.

RE: Installing new Laptop hd

but even then, even with an identical machine, unless you use the Microsoft OEM preinstallation tools, Windows Activation will kick in and block the operating system from working as soon as you switch the drive between machines
And you would need a windows product key for each machine
Really not worth the pain
