Sony Vaio VGN-NR21S no display

Hi I recently was given a laptop and when I first tried to start it up the power light came on the battery light started flashing and the hard disk light went for a few seconds then stopped. There is no beep when switched on, no display (tried with torch) the caps lock light and number lock light are able to be toggled for a few seconds then become stuck in whatever state they are in. If left running like this for a about an hour the hard drive starts to run like a normal laptop would and the caps lock and number lock keys become operational as do the function keys (volume goes up and down and I get beeps. I tried hooking it up to my tv through a 15 pin to hdmi lead and although my tv recognised it was plugged into something by making the hdmi ext available there was no signal to the display on the tv when pressing fn and f7 to toggle monitors.CTRL ALT DEL works because by pressing these then enter i am getting the windows on/off sounds. Does windows need to be running for the function keys to work?
Will windows load even if the graphics card isnt working?

RE: Sony Vaio VGN-NR21S no display

I'm not convinved that its the graphics chip.
Your description may just indicate that the hard drive has failed in such a way that its stopping the motherboard from booting
Disconnect the drive and see if it fires up to a BIOS screen. Reseat the RAM while you are at it.
If that doesn't allow it to boot, then the graphics chip probably has failed.

RE: Sony Vaio VGN-NR21S no display

John is absolutely right in what he says and trying to boot with the hard drive removed is worth a go. If, however, the machine still fails to boot and no graphics are showing on an external screen then you should look to a motherboard problem.

Laptop motherboards are very difficult, sometimes, to diagnose and whilst it might be the graphics chip, has failed or lifted, it could easily be the northbridge or charging circuit .. so on and so forth.

In passing no the function key for toggling screens does not need to have Windows running.

You need specialist help to diagnose the problem and repair if that is an economical option.
