it is the r1938 model and when I turn it on it is asking for the hdd password which I can get by.but then it is asking me for the boot password.which I do not know so it will not boot up.

Sounds like the BIOS password has been set.
On most older PCs you can reset that with a jumper on the motherboard. To do the same on a latop (assuming the jumpers are there) means an entire strip down of the machine
