Advent Webcam - Problems using Skype

Hi, I have and Advent Desktop computer with Windows 8. I recently bought a Advent webcam so I could use Skype. Problem I have is that although the person I am calling can see me - I cannot see them! Have tried all the Skype tips without avail. Help! I need this for an online course.

It sounds as if their camera is not working or is switched off.
