RE: hard drive

The first signs can be unexpected shutdowns, Boot-Up errors/failures, BSOD's & things like that. Sometimes a drive will give out without warning so if you recognise any of these symptoms then back up immediately before your drive fails altogether. In other cases the drive may perform for days or weeks with intermittent problems but my advice is don't risk that happening.
You say your pc is performing ok, so why the question of a dodgy hard drive in the first place?

RE: hard drive

To the list of symptoms I would add:
Long pauses for no apparent reason
Whirring and/or clicking noises.

RE: hard drive

Most modern drives support SMART monitoring of hard disks. This can report on several critical issues, e.g. re-allocated sectors, read failures, temperature etc. You can download a tool to read this data from http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/index.html. That may give you a better idea of whether your disk is near failure. Regular monitoring will also help spot any changes over time.

RE: hard drive

most hard drive manufacturers have a diagnostics program which will analyse your hard drive and tell you whether it is faulty or not. Some run within Windows, some are bootable floppys or CDs
Its fair to say that most of the live contributors to this forum regard these tools with a fair degree of scepticism regarding their efficiency, but they are worth trying.

Links for most tools are on this page

Also, IF a disk is failing it usually (not always) gives prior warning in Windows Management: ATA read errors under event viewer / system
