What is a good computer make?

I want to buy a new desktop PC and get everything in 1 box. It seems that these days the only people doing that are PC World and Dell.

Dell is an easy choice as they are Dell systems but PC World offer a few different makes.

Are Acer any good? Packard Bell?

Does anyone have any good advice on makes to avoid or recommend? Is there anything I should be looking for? Is Dell as bad as people say?

I need it for business you seem to get less for your money when you choose that option.

Thanks for your help

I think Dell is a good company, or at least no worse than any other computer manufacturer with some good prices on their standard computers. Their warranty repair service is swift and efficient, should you need to make use of it.

RE: What is a good computer make?

Personally I am not often impressed by Dell. I don't know what it is exactly about them, and even with an accout manager giving me good pricing, their kit just seems to be - slower.

HP/Compaq tend to do some pretty good stuff generally, they seem to be sturdy and robust.

Acer are generally 'more lovely' for home users, I don't think they are really business machines.

One thing to watch out for in Business use is the version of Windows. If you are using a Windows Server (2000/2003/2008 etc) then you absolutely will want to get XP PRO (not home) or Vista Business (not Home) to add the PC to the domain. A lot of business are sticking with XP Pro because it seems so much more efficient than Vista is generally.

If you have any further specifically business requirements then I would be more than happy to talk to you about them - it's what I do day-in, day-out.

mesh computers are quite good, i would not go for dell as they are built not to be upgradeable.

RE: What is a good computer make?

Just do not buy a dell, yes they can be upgradeable. But to be honest 90% of the pcs coming in for repair are dell, not because they are popular but cause dell uses cheap junk so they can sell their pcs CHEAP. But their tech support is fabulous. So if you want something that lasts buy a custom built pc. In terms of laptops go for 1-Toshiba 2-Sony they last a life time.

RE: What is a good computer make?

how long is a piece of string... forget looking at names like HP, Dell etc, you need to look deeper.

Many PC's use the same parts inside, just they may scrub the word "Asus", "VA", NVIDIA" or "intel" etc off the etching on the PCB's & write their own company name on the components. All tbe companies buy in boards & parts from other manufacturers or they are made by sub contractors based on licensed designs.

RE: What is a good computer make?

Short answer - HP or Dell. There is a reason they are the top 2 PC dealers. I don't think you want to go down the custom build route... it tends to be for the serious computer enthusiast. You don't want to be confronted by decisions like "what timings would you like on your RAM?".

Dell and HP both give you everything in one neat package and are used to dealing with computer novices and as such are very good at getting you up and running quickly.

With regards to the comment above about businesses sticking with XP rather than moving to Vista... the reason for this comes hugely down to hardware issues rather than Vista being inferior to XP. Vista requires powerful hardware to run. Many businesses just don't have the machines to run it and that's why their not upgrading. Your new machine should have no problem unlocking Vista's potential.
