Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

Hi,

I have a problem with my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo li 1705 laptop. At some point it suddenly started to reboot. 10 minutes later it did it again. After that I was not able to switch it on. The power and wireless lights are on, but nothing happens - just a black screen. Only holding a swtch-on button for a few seconds allows to switch it off. I then removed a battery and disconnected the cord, followed by holding the switch-on for 10 seconds. It magically solved the problem but, unfortunately, my laptop got frozen again 20 minutes later. I did perform several tests (memory, disc etc.) - no problems. Also, no alarm sounds when I start my PC. I should say that sometimes it starts, in other cases I see only a black screen (power and wireless lights are on). I then noticed that moving/touching the laptop causes this freezing (not sure it is the only reason). At the end of the day, after many hard reboots, some .dll files became corrupted and I cannot start Windows even if I do not touch laptop. Any ideas what causes the problem? I tried to reseat RAM and HDD but it did not help.

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

A number of things may cause this random rebooting.
1. you could have a thermal problem due to dust build up within the laptop. High temperatures would make the system unstable and lead to hanging or crashing and subsequent reboots.

2. There could be a loose connection other than the RAM or DISK (ie wireless card, keyboard or screen connector etc) somewhere within the laptop.

3. You may have some malware causing operating system instability.

If you were still able to boot the PC I'd recommend checking the event logs for clues. However you now need to try and diagnose the cause some other way. You could try booting the PC from CD, DVD or USB stick which ought to rule out malware if it's still unstable. Other than this you probably need to strip it down and clean out any dust, reseat the heatsink with fresh thermal transfer compound and look for other potential mechanical or electrical faults.

If this suggestion falls outside your comfort zone, you can log a call on the PCIQ site for a nearby PCIQ Professional to do the work for you.

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

Thanks. I need to mention that (occacionally) I am able to boot my PC using DVD but the system is still unstable - freezes/reboots (these two possibilities look random), especially if I touch the laptop. Thus, I do not think that malware is responsible for that, although, few hours before I got this problem, I catched several viruses and deleted infected files.

I will definitely check all possible connections. It seems that pushing a keyboard is especially harmful for my laptop now.

The only thing I do not understand is why, after freezing, the only way to boot it again is to extract a battery/disconnect a cord.

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

I can't remember the exact make, it was either Tyan, Gigabyte or Asus, but one of the desktop motherboards would shutdown and illuminate a bright red LED on the motherboard as part of a thermal cutout routine. The *only* way to reset this condition was to remove the power cable and attempt to power on the PC by pressing the power switch to discharge all residual voltage from the PSU.

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

Funny. I opened my laptop and checked all possible connections. PC was working then for few hours without any problems. I caught several viruses, by the way. Next day I started to have all the troubles again. Touching a laptop, especially in the bottom-right corner causes freezing and/or rebooting. It requires several attempts before I am able to switch it on: when I push a power button, LED and wireless lights are normally on, fan and DVD-Rom are working, but nothing else happens, not even BIOS screen appears. Only 25% of attempts are successful.
Interestingly, AVIRA Antivir, when scanning, causes sometimes freezing as well.

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

you've got a motherboard problem with that machine

worse I suspect you've got some kind of intermittent short circuit which is being closed or discharged when you touch the machine

or it could be a static problem. Does it do it when you are in another building? Or if you take antistatic measures first?

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

One more weird observation: when the PC was ON and working (which happens very rarely, btw) I used my hair dryer to create some blow of warm air onto the laptop (I did not touch it since, as I've mentioned already, it freezes the PC). The air blow caused the freezing as well..

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

pure guesswork here, but I wonder if the keyboard has an intermittent faulty connection?
If you physically remove the keyboard from the laptop and then boot it (with an external USB k/b) what happens?

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

The same problem as before, even if I physically remove a keyboard. Only ~1/4 attempts to boot are successful. Laptop freezes whenever it wants (normally within first 10 minutes). I can also 'force' this process by slightly pushing on the case, which seems more sensitive in one of the corners. Sometimes, as I mentioned, just a touching makes it frozen. I should probably stop bothering people here..

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

I'll vote for a crack in the motherboard at the corner where it can be touched to crash it.

The other crashes are due to the board expanding when heating up and breaking / shorting circuits.

You need a new motherboard in the laptop.

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

pure hypothesis then, but I'd assume a bad connection on the motherboard that is sensitive to heat and movement
if (big IF) I'm right it needs a new motherboard. I doubt if its cost effective

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

I think, I am about to give up but I would like to mention one more interesting observation: as I have written already, ~1/4 of all the attempts to boot are successful (in the sense that it works for a few minutes). However, I need to say that I can boot my laptop only if a power cord is attached (no matter whether the battery is in or not). I tried at least 50 times to boot it only with a battery inside but I never succeed. The battery seems working - it gets discharged if I leave it ON for some time, and recharges, if I connect a power cord.

it all points to a problem with the motherboard
Scrap it. Offer it on Ebay for spares, someone might by it for the screen / keyboard / mousepad / plastics

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

Just to finalize this story - I have finally asked a friend of mine, who is an IT professional, to check my laptop. He tested everything and concluded that this was indeed due to a defective motherboard. Thus, PCIQ guys correctly identified the problem.

this was a ten month old thread - totally pointless reopening it
And if you read the whole thread you'll see the problem is something other than overheating - it was crashing when he touched it!

but - in this case - what you said was wrong.
May work on another machine, but we were not dealing with another machine: we were dealing with THIS machine, which clearly had a broken motheboard

All,

this was one of the cheapest laptops that time. We all "got" what we paid for. A few problems like mine in several years does not mean that ALL these laptops had this issue.

Fujitsu's data sheet for this model is dated April 2007. So any of these still around are going to be four or five years old, and very much on borrowed time
As Kamil says, four years out of a cheap laptop isn't bad

I think (not sure) these were built for Fuji by ECS/Elite
says it all really
Even so, four years isn't bad for what is basically a disposable machine

Can I put this to bed once and for all? Almost 100% to be a case of unleaded solder on the graphics chip failing. 'Motherboard broken' doesn't really show much awareness of the problem with these laptops. Reflow would fix short term, reball will fix long term. We don't all have £300 for a new laptop!

RE: Amilo li1705 freezes/reboots

Col
it had been put to bed - last post was over a year ago
Actually I don't think you're right over the diagnosis. These machines used a VIA Chrome 9 graphics chip, and I've yet to hear of any solder problems with those. Yes they have other problems associated with VIA chipsets, but as far as I'm aware the solder failing is not one of them....
The machines with the solder issue were generally nVidia based.
Its a cheap machine, using a VIA chipset and an ECS motherboard. Both indicate a predestination to premature component failure. This one lasted four years - quite good for an ECS motherboard really.
