Having downloaded Norton via the internet. I cannot now access the internet as it comes up with HTTP

Having downloaded Norton via the internet. I cannot now access the internet as it comes up with, HTTP 400 bad request, when any address is typed in. I have disabled all aspects of Norton with no change. The laptop is connected wirelessly. It has Windows Vista.

Go here first:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the removal, then download AVG Free Anti-Virus from:
http://free.avg.com/

Sorted! (I hope)

RE: Having downloaded Norton via the internet. I cannot now access the internet as it comes up with HTTP

catch-22 here - she can't get online to download the Norton Removal tool...
The answer is to download the tool to another computer and then transfer it to a pen drive, and then copy it to the affected machine.
This is yet another example of how Norton software can be a real pain.
Robin suggests AVG free antivirus, my current peference is for the free Avast! antivirus software simply because it seems less intrusive and also is better at scanning downloads in real-time, but either will do the job

Click on the start button and then the run tab, then type in "cmd" and this will take you into the command prompt. When using Vista sometimes it will come up with "the commands needs elevattion",all you ned do is to right click on the command prompt and seect run as administrator.
In the command prompt type in:-

netsh firewall reset and click on the enter tab wait for the computer to reply you with an "OK"

Then type :-

netsh winsock reset and wait for the comply from the computer prompting you to restart the computer.

This resets all the ports and usually solves the problem.

RE: Having downloaded Norton via the internet. I cannot now access the internet as it comes up with HTTP

Yes, it usually does work.

The command "netsh firewall reset" will reset the firewall while

The command "netsh winsock reset" will reset the TCP ports and then you will need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Remember if you are using a vista and it says that you need an elevation to carry out the command then all need to do first of all is to click on the start button and then right click on the "run" command prompt icon on the list and then select run as administrator.

Victor - the "netsh firewall reset" only resets the WINDOWS FIREWALL and NOT Norton.....

Oh, and Vista doesn't have the 'run' command enabled as default.

"Oh, and Vista doesn't have the 'run' command enabled as default"

But for some reason the Vista search box incorporates a Run function, so it you enter cmd in the search box and press return it will open a cmd window.
