RE: Red cross on wireless icon

check the settings on the machine
i.e. check password, check that wep/wpa is set correctly, etc
probably best to delete the existing conenction and try again
any chance someone has changed the settinsgs on the router?

RE: Red cross on wireless icon

any chance that windows update has slipped in a drier update without you realising?
Try a driver rollback or system restore

RE: Red cross on wireless icon

Also on another forum some one suggested Click "Start" and then click "Run"

In the open box type cmd and then hit OK

Type sc query wzcsvc hit "enter"

If the Windows Zero Configuration service is running, the words "STATE : # RUNNING" will appear

did this and it states that it is running.

"Did a restore to factory settings last night"

In which case either the recovery image has the wrong drivers, or, you really have put the wrong wireless key in
What make / model of machine have yo got? what version of windows - and which service pack do yo have installed?

ps - drier update should have rad driver update... just a typo

RE: Red cross on wireless icon

Have you ever been able to connect to this wireless connection using your laptop?

If not then I'm willing to bet that your encryption is WPA or WPA2. Some XP machines don't like WPA or WAP2 encryption so you should change it to WPA and test - if it fails to connect then lower the encryption to WEP

I'll bet you're using a wireless dongle as well which is another pointer to the encryption being too high for it to connect.

RE: Red cross on wireless icon

PS The encryption levels (WPA2 - WPA - WEP) need to be changed through your wireless router.

RE: Red cross on wireless icon

OK, so it failed. Then you restored back to factory settings and it still work
Then the explanation is some kind of hardware failure. You've eliminated the software as a problem. UNLESS you've forgotten the wireless key and are getting it wrong (whatever you may think is the correct key)

RE: Red cross on wireless icon

The red cross means it has been disable go to network connections right click the wireless and click enable. Then turn on wireless and try to connect. Right click wireless icon in task/system tray click view all available and click connect.
