Having problems with sage since amending vat to 15%. Now showing up numerous errors in disk doctor w

Having problems with sage since amending vat to 15%. Now showing up numerous errors in disk doctor when it was zero errors before I changed the vat. Client & supplier activity no longer showing - although everything in reports. Can anyone help. Have contacted sage but still waiting for reply.Regards Janice Kearton

Hi Janice,

The two errors are completely different and unrelated (as hard as it is to believe).

For of all, you will need to correct any disk problems you have using Microsoft's built-in chkdsk program then it sounds as if the disk errors have corrupted your Sage software. Once the disk errors are corrected then you'll need to reinstall Sage again.

just an addon to Richards comment
Make sure you back up your Sage data folders before you try anything. Would be a good idea to do a second backup after running chkdsk, but before attempting to reinstall Sage. Sometime reinstalling Sage will overwrite the existing data files

RE: Having problems with sage since amending vat to 15%. Now showing up numerous errors in disk doctor w

Hi there, thanks for your replies. The problems are on my Sage back up disks. The Check Data in sage showed up the faults after I backed up following entries with the amended VAT! It's been a harsh lesson for me I have only every used one back up disc for the whole year's accounts. I hate to think that I may have to redo a whole year's work. In future I will back up monthly and then it will only be one month to redo! Hopefully Sage will have replied by the next time am in office which is Wednesday. All was okay until Friday, when I did my first back up since the Christmas break - that's when Check Data in Sage showed up lots of errors to do with Foreign Currency, which I don't even use, instead of the normal zero errors. Thanks again. Janice Kearton

are you backing up to CDs or floppies?
and you dont make it clear whether or not the original date files on the hard drive are corrupt or not

Backing up on floppies, which are showing errors when I do check data within sage. Before I changed the VAT there were no errors in sage, which is why I thought it was something to do with this.
Thanks. Janice Kearton

RE: Having problems with sage since amending vat to 15%. Now showing up numerous errors in disk doctor w

Using floppy disks is a terrible idea now there are many cheap alternatives. Floppy disks are easily damaged and can be destroyed by a faulty disk drive. CDs or DVDs may degrade slowly with time but I think they are much less prone to sudden catastrophic failure. You can backup data to an external hard drive or a USB "pen" drive but these do fail so don't place all your eggs in one basket. And if the amount of data you are backing up is small enough to fit on floppy disks then online backup is an attractive option.

Janice, the notion of a backup, in whatever form, is that it is a SECOND copy. What about the first copy that, presumably, is stored on your computer hard drive?

on top of which, Sage usually creates archive copies within its own directory structure just in case the data you are working on is corrupted
I suggest you speak to the Sage guys, describe what you were doing and how you were storing the files, and listen very carefully to the instructions they give you. They should be able to find recent versions of the files on your machine

Thanks everyone who has replied - especially Jon in Morecambe for all his advice. Am back in office on Wednesday when, hopefully, there will be an email from Sage. If not will take your advice Jon and ring them Only trouble is, I get a bit flustered when trying to do what they advise over the phone, they are so quick!! That's why I prefer email, which I can work out at my own speed. Hey ho, fun and games. Hopefully will get it sorted by end of the week. Thanks again everyone. Janice Kearton

trouble is, in a case like this e-mail invariably produces answers to the wrong questions
this is a case where you need to speak to them

I am currently having problems with my vat return.
I am running on the cash accounting system and the last quarter returns have not got the purchase payments that i need to reclaim, but the net figures are included, so my VAT is showing that i need to pay more than i actually should.

This sounds like a question for Sage support. I am not sure that we have any Sage experts here.
