Windows vista has crashed and was unstable on my neighbours computer he has loaded the backup disc N

Windows vista has crashed and was unstable on my neighbours computer he has loaded the backup disc No1. the computer says please wait after 7 hours it does not proceed to load the Operating system window,s vista can we download them incase the disc id corrupted?

It should not take that long. It will normally start within a few seconds and should restore the whole disk in about 20 minutes.

Perhaps the problem is the hard disk?

I'm inclined to agree with Alan - suspect hard disk
However what make/nodel of machine is it? Have you tried reloading from the hidden partition (NOT the recovery CD)?

One symptom of a damaged hard drive (particularly, it seems, a newer SATA hard drive) is that it runs very very slowly.

Remember, your neighbour can call out a PCIQ professional engineer if he/she feels they are in too deep trying to fix the computer themselves.

the machine is a packard bell bought from pc world I can see the hard drive in the bios and and have mounted it in another mechine using another recovery disc however I cannot access the hidden partition or the c drive the machine runs very slowly and is unable to fix startup problems

not sure what you mean here, but DON'T use a recover y disk from a different brand of machine - you'll quite possibly trash the the MBR and partition table

From what you say though it still sounds like a failed drive
