Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Outlook Express does not have a built-in spell checker but it HAD always been able to use the Word dictionary to check spellings when Word was installed. Not anymore. This does not work with Office 2007 unless you are French, because Outlook Express defaults to a French dictionary that comes with Word. Microsoft are supremely indifferent to this problem. I have searched for a solution but not found a workable one that is free. So I am wondering if anyone else has found a solution to this? I need UK English spellings, not US.

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Microsoft acknowledges this in KB932974 and the only recourse they offer is to install a third party spell checker.

Apparently "Spell Checker For OE" from Snapfiles is free and should take care of your problem.

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Alternatively, another forum suggests reinstalling the Office 2003 Proofing tools, (assumes your previous Office version was 2003) as a custom install, this module and nothing else. Apparently, english and other flavor dictionaries magically appear in Outlook Express with no other changes. And Office 2007 still works fine.

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Thank you Julain L, your contribution is appreciated. However the spell checker available through Snapfiles did not work for me (some others report similar problems) and in any case the dictionary installed only offers US spellings. Likewise, I would not recommend anyone to upgrade to Office 2007 and in this case my client did not have an earlier version of Office, so no chance of lifting the old proofing tools. I tried and eliminated all these well-documented options before I posted my query.

Alan - the Snapfiles thing may be out of date. This appears to be the homepage of that project http://www.geocities.com/vampirefo/
Could be worth a try downloading from here (no - I've not tried it myself)

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Thanks Jon, but again I have already tried this. I have encountered this problem twice so far. The first time I installed this dictionary program but the second time it would not work. As it only offers US spellings, it really is not a very satisfactory solution in any case.

This problem is SO annoying because Microsoft could not be bothered to make the Office 2007 dictionary unavailable to Outlook Express but then could not be bothered to fix the fact that your only option is then a French dictionary. The result is that it looks superficially as if you can check spelling but it turns out you can only do this in French! Any other company would surely do something about this, but with Microsoft it seems to be a case of "Microsoft giveth and Microsoft taketh away".

Its not an answer to your problem, but apparently US English DOES work. There's a tutorial + regfix at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/68395-windows-mail-spell-check.html

However still not the UK English you need

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Thanks again Jon, but your reference is to an article on Vista's Windows Mail, not Outlook Express. However the article does mention Thunderbird, Mozilla's free email client. I have no experience of this software but it does seem to have a spell checker. Can anyone vouch for Thunderbird?

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Sorry my previous suggestions were covering old ground. Have you tried the suggestions in the following site, which suggests you can use either MS Works or MS Office 95 or later to solve the problem if your client has these?

Thunderbird isn't the prettiest piece of software but it is certainly functional.

You may have to download the english (uk) dictionary separately and install it.

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

OE and Vista mail is really the same product -I would have thought the same fix should work to get the US English Word 2007 spellchecker working

As for Thunderbird, I hate it. Tried several times to configure multiple mailboxes for clients, and run into problems with multiple SMTP mailboxes all trying to send via the same account. Seems OK if you only have once mail account, but multiple ones seem a problem. Hopefully someone can point out where I went wrong...

RE: Outlook Express Spell Checker and Office 2007

Slightly Off topic, but I use Sea Monkey which is a branch of teh Mozilla/Thunderbird family. I have multiple Email accounts and can specify which outgoing SMTP server to use for each account. There is also a default one which gets used if you don't specify. On Sea Moneky the option is set on "Edit/Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings/" and is towards the bottom of the main tab for each account.
