My computer does not have Micro soft office installed, how much would the software cost me and how would I obtain it. Not sure if this is relevant but I am an oap

you can buy version of Office 10 online from Microsoft at this website
However you may find you can pick up the home/student version cheaper at PCWorld - they're knocking it out at around £20. What they sell you is the product key: you still have to go online and download it

However there is a better option:
If all you want is typing and spreadsheets, download the FREE equivalent product from Oracle (was Sun)
If you want a similar program from someone you've heard of, try the IBM Lotus Symphony - basically the same program as OpenOffice, but with w tweaked interface. Personally I'd go for the OpenOffice version

quick correction - that should have said "However you may find you can pick up the home/student version cheaper at PCWorld - they're knocking it out at around £20 CHEAPER...."

@David: If you have a Hotmail account, if you press the 'Office' button at the top of the webpage, you can use free online versions of the most used Office apps. They have all the most often used features and you probably would not need anything more.

interesting idea, but theres no way I'd try my data to a remote server somewhere on the far side of the world

I can't see any way of storing the files locally ether - unless you already have Office install anyway
